US Army: ARNG Mobilization as of August 29, 2002
September 1, 2002
The following summary is selective and not all-inclusive. At time of writing 2nd Battalion, 142nd Field Artillery out of Fort Smith, AR. received their pre-mobilization warning orders and other units are in the same position. The intent is to show a broad sample of unit configurations for the purposes of base security. The sole exception is the 769th Engineer Battalion, which although B Company was excluded, is a full strength activation for their combat support role in Afghanistan. Most activations are replacing the “first wave” of 270 day activations from October and November of 2001 in support of Operation Noble Eagle. The current activation of Texas’s 3rd Brigade, 49th Armored Division is somewhat of an intriguing puzzle.
In July 2002, 1st Battalion, 145th Field Artillery was notified of their impending mobilization as part of Operation Noble Eagle. They were to replace California’s 3rd Battalion, 160th Infantry in providing security for Tooele Army Depot, Deseret Chemical Depot and Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. In July the battalion reported to Camp Williams, UT. to complete the activation process. The battalion arrived at Fort Carson, CO. for mobilization training. The change of command occurred at Tooele Army Depot on 21st August. Battalion Headquarters and support base is at Tooele Army Depot, with detachments rotating to Deseret and Dugway. The mobilization appears to be 270 days, the current maximum permissible by Federal Law.

On the 1st August they departed for Fort Dix, NJ for two weeks predeployment training. Mid August will see the batteries deploy to military installations in the Eastern USA to provide base security. They may be replacing 1st Battalion, 115th Infantry from Maryland.

Not much is known about the mobilization of 3rd Brigade, 49th Armored Division. It seems an unusual step to activate a four battalion combat brigade, although the battalion configurations would seem to indicate a multiple base security role very much like that of TF Santa Fe and TF Keystone. Any hard information would be most welcome.
