Mr. Helgason refers to May 1943 as the Stalingrad of the U-boats.  25% of the German Navy’s operational fleet was lost in this month, and it marks the turning point of the Battle of the Atlantic. By any standard, the casualty rate among U-boat crews was appalling; May 1943 was no exception.  Of the 1785 men on the 41 boats listed below, only 183 survived. Thirty-three boats were lost with all hands (bold text).
