Articles marked with an asterisk previously appeared in
the Orbat history Magazine or
elsewhere on our site. New material ranges from the historical (the British
Army during the time of the American Revolution) to current operations
(Operation Telic, the British
forces in Iraq). Two chapters from the Royal Engineers project with Graham
Watson are included, one revised and one new. The entry on the Gurkhas in
the Regular Regiments series differs from material normally posted there.
While giving the deployments and assignments of the infantry battalions, it
also includes other material on the Brigade of Gurkhas and sources for
further research. The full text of the recent of the recent message from
The Chief Of The General Staff, General Sir Mike Jackson, to the Army,
“Delivering Security in a Changing World: Future Capabilities” can be found
online at
http://www.mod.uk/issues/security/cm6269/cgs.htm. This involves the
elimination of four infantry battalions along with numerous other changes
designed “to make the Army more suited to the expeditionary operations that
are now part of life.” This includes improving combat and logistic support
at the brigade level, which sounds similar to the US Army’s current emphasis
on brigades as “units of action” able to operate on their own, with organic
logistic and other support.
note on royal engineer articles This section contains Corps of Royal Engineers:
Units and Organization, 1899—2002 by Dr. Graham E. Watson and Richard A.
Rinaldi. Roughly 200 pages organized into eight chapters, this is the most
comprehensive known listing of the RE, which has had a lot of units (their
basic unit being the company, now termed squadron). Chapters One to Four
were previously issued (covering 1899 to 1939), along with Chapter Seven
(the Reserves 1947-1967). In this issue, we are presenting a revised version of
Chapter Two (First World War) with additional information added, and Chapter
Five (Second World War). Chapters Six (the post-war Regulars) and Eight (the
Reserves from 1967) are still being finalized. Richard Rinaldi
