The 2nd Mounted Division was formed on
02 September 1914 by the joining of already existing Territorial Force
mounted brigades. Formed in East Anglia the division remained here until
April 1915 when it went to Egypt. In August 1915 its units started to
dismount and prepare for service on Gallipoli. Due to heavy casualties
the division had to be reinforced by newly arrived mounted brigades
from Great Britain and the original five brigades formed the 1st and
2nd Mounted Composite Brigades. The division served at Suvla from 18
August 1915 until the evacuation on 19/20 December 1915, it now returned
to Egypt. Once back in Egypt the division started to break up and by
21 January 1916 it ceased to exist.
