1st South Western Mounted Brigade

The 1st South Western Mounted Brigade was a Territorial Force brigade already in existence at the outbreak of the war. At the outbreak of the war it was based at Salisbury. The brigade appears to have broken up in 1915 and the Headquarters staff may have been used to form the 2/1st South Western Mounted Brigade.

Battles and Engagements

Did not take part in any battles while an independent brigade.

 

   

 

Mounted Units

 

1/1st Hampshire Yeomanry. 04 Aug 1914 - Mar 1916. Split to provide cavalry for the:
58th Division - A Squadron.
60th Division - HQ and B Squadrons.
61st Division - C Squadron.

1/1st North Somerset Yeomanry. 04 Aug 1914 - Nov 1914. Left the brigade and went to France where it joined the 6th Cavalry Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division.

1/1st Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry. 04 Aug 1914 - Nov 1915. Split up to provide cavalry for the:
40th Division - A Squadron.
41st Division - B Squadron.
38th Division - HQ and D Squadrons.

1/1st Dorset Yeomanry. 04 Aug 1914 - Sep 1914. To the 1/2nd South Midland Mounted Brigade, 2nd Mounted Division.
